Super book. 90% of tech-related books "for beginners" either ...

Super book. 90% of tech-related books "for beginners" either 1) assume somewhere around Chapter 3 that you have acquired prior information from whatever secret club such information is actually acquired or 2) treat you like someone who is incapable of understanding the really sophisticated stuff. This is one of the exceptions: It takes you every step along the way from absolute basics that any person who understands how to use gmail and has ever had to figure out their IP address (without fully understanding what that is) will get to all the things you've wanted to know, like how exactly do I get data from a website, and what the hell is "SSH"? Only drawback: the illustrations are utterly and completely useless.

Great intro to how the Internet plumbing works

Although I had a general concept about how the Internet works (ip addresses, routers, etc...) this book did an awesome job of progressively building up the concepts from the ground (hardware) up to the user level (an application like a web browser or and email client). It saved a lot of the confusion OSI abstractions until the end. Highly recommend this book, very accessible but also informative.

Mission accomplished. Book provides a good overview of TCP/IP. I'm not an IT professional but reasonably technology literate. This book provided some practical insight to what's going on in the background in a manner that's easy to digest.

Soul City, a place where racial divisions are juxtaposed and black love flows freely, is the main setting for The Portable Promised Land, a debut collection of short stories by Tour�. Buoyant and edged with magical realism, stories such as "The Steviewondermobile"; "A Hot Time at the Church of Kentucky Fried Souls and the Spectacular Final Sermon of the Right Revren Daddy Love"; and "The Sad, Sweet Story of Sugar Lips Shinehot, the Man with the Portable Promised Land" are moving testaments to the urban black experience, comingling or interchanging music, religion, and human failings with dramatic and comic effect. We are told: "No matter how rotund she was Daddy Love could still hug her in surround-sound stereo because Daddy Love was super-sized as though God had intended him to be literally larger than life." And, when Sugar Lips Shinehot dare ask the price of boundless freedom (by eliminating all white men) offered to him by Reverend Scratch (a.k.a. the Devil) and is chided for doing so, Sugar Lips simply replies, "If you from Harlem you do." These main stories are fresh and earnest, and well worth reading.

The rest of the collection, however, is a mixed bag. A triptych of the Black Widow, a female hip-hop militant-gangsta out to turn the world of the white folks (or MCs--Melatonin Challenged) upside down, is sensationalist but falls flat, and several of the pieces rely on catalogs of pop culture references, words and phrases in the black lexicon, or amateurish listing. While the delivery may be messy, the ideas are clear and important--from what America would be like in a black-dominated society to interracial relationships to the importance and beauty of black language. As Tour� notes: "When you a Negro white folk is like doors. You got to go though them to get most anywhere." --Michael Ferch

Tour‚ takes a measured yet whimsical look at the ups and (more often) downs of modern African-American life and culture in his successful debut collection of stories, lists and essays, most of which use racial stereotypes as their jumping-off point. He gets things off to a funny start with "The Steviewondermobile," a snappy yarn about a resident of the mythical Soul City named Huggy Bear Jackson, who installs in his Cadillac a state-of-the-art sound system that will play only the blind soul singer's tunes. "Attack of the Love Dogma" takes a pointedly satiric tack as it portrays a detox center where black men are slowly weaned of their "Blonde Obsession," while "A Hot Time at the Church of Kentucky Fried Souls..." finds one Daddy Love setting up a chapel in an abandoned restaurant formerly run by "that good ol neo-massa Colonel Sanders." Tour‚ displays a fine eye and ear for language in a pair of word-based conceits, "Afrolexicology Today's Bi-Annual List of the Top 50 Words in African-America" and "The African-American Aesthetics Hall of Fame." His over-the-top sense of humor serves him well, although occasionally his sharp but somewhat hyperactive style gets away from him, most notably in a trilogy of stories about a female hip-hopper-cum-ghetto guerrilla named the Black Widow that degenerate into facile diatribes on racial politics. A few missteps aside, this respected essayist and Rolling Stone editor should find an enthusiastic audience for his lively brand of social commentary.

This collection of stories, vignettes, and essays is a sharp celebration of black urban life, filled with characters at once surreal and familiar. Tour 's Soul City includes people like Huggy Bear and his Steviewondermobile, an automotive expression of his love of Stevie Wonder's music; Reverend Daddy Love, a preacher who loves some of his congregation more than others; and the Jacksons, whose son has been possessed by every black stereotype imaginable. But this book is more than a collection of stories about eccentric residents. There are commentaries on black language (Afrolexicology), rituals for couples breaking up, jazzy tone poems about one-night stands, and tough-love therapy for black men who insist on dating blondes. In this debut collection, Rolling Stone contributing editor Tour has given life in Soul City a comic edge, revealing the humor and absurdities behind the seriousness of race. Even the author's note and acknowledgments are fun to read. Highly recommended.

Oh WOW! Toure's The Portable Promise Land is summed up in one word, WOW - Wonderful One of a kind Writer!
This book of short stories is a trip into an alternate world where man's automobile systems are designed for Stevie Wonder (and that is not a bad thing), a church gathers in a Kentucky Fried Chicken building (Oh what a commentary), people are bound to stay in the playground of the blas�, and break ups are out in the open (no room for gossip here).
This collection of eclectic stories takes a real reader on a ride of renewed interest in creative writing with messages. In the land of relationship novels (which are not a bad thing) this book is refreshing. Toure is a truly talented writer with a lot to say. His stories are not only clever and entertaining but they require that you think while reading. He really challenges himself in his writing with word choices and word play. In his story "A Guest", he tells one story in short simple sentences that all begin with "A". His story "The Break-up Ceremony" (which I suggested that a friend put in an anthology he created for his writing class) is an interesting view of a public ceremony announcing the break up of a relationship. This was one of the best stories in the collection.
My angst with this collection of stories is he strays from prose into listings. Although they are appropriate for his thematic scheme, I felt they took away from the flow of the book. Also some of his stories have so many layers that re-reading may be necessary (but I guess that is not always a bad thing). My true rating would be a 4.5 but since halves are not offered I do not feel it generous to give it a five. This is a highly recommended read.

Tour�'s Tour de Force

I bought this book for the story "Solomon's Big Day" which I heard read on NPR and was totally taken with and stayed in my car to hear the end of. The story is a great description of a young boy's creative spirit and his close call with fame. Though clearly fiction, it's not that far off from what I imagine to be reality.

Then, there's the rest of the book and all the other captivating stories! Tour�'s ability to create a mood and draw me in is like going on a series of mini-vacations to other worlds. I'm so pleased to know of his existence and will track his future work.

A Portable Pleasure

The Portable Promised Land is portable laughter, portable epiphany, and a portable good time. I brought it up to my roof and read some of it aloud to my roomate. I read one story to my boyfriend. This book wanted, begged even, to be shared aloud. I laughed at Toure's caricatures of black urban life (the redundancy of fast food fried chicken chains in Brooklyn), at his crazy imagination (an enormous preacher jumps into the air and hovers fifty feet above his congregation) and at the strokes of linguistic genius that elevate a story from the merely entertaining to a seriously sweet read. I also like that his "Afrolexicology" list includes "Vodou" - spelled according to proper Haitian Creole.

Eva and Swede's Story.

Once again Dale Mayer had caught my attention on the first pages of a book and held me there until the end.

Swede and his Seal Team were in Mexico to destroy a terrorist training camp with the cooperation of the Mexican government.

Eva was in Mexico helping to rescue horses that were in need of food and some even medical attention.

What were the chances their paths would cross and Swede would need to protect her and even rescue her from kidnappers?

This is another fantastic book in the SEALs of Honor series but Dale Mayer never fails to hold the interest of her readers. This one is filled with mystery, suspense, kidnapping, murder, terrorists and action as well as 2 people trying to protect their hearts.

Once Eva and Swede's budding relationship comes to light, Hawk (Eva's big brother and a member of the same Seal team as Swede) finds humor in that another Seal has fallen.

I love that the book has the characters introduced in the earlier ones in this series and centers this one around different characters with their beginning in a relationship.

I highly recommend this book/author!
I love reading Dale Mayer's books!
I did not hesitate to give this book 5 stars because I feel it deserves no less.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series, Shadow to see how his life unfolds.

A great addition to an awesome series

I have been hooked on the 'SEALs of Honor' series from book one with Mason. And I have yet to read a book I didn't love. Swede's story was one of those that had been building for years when it came to Eva. But I completely understood his moral code when I related to a team mate's sister. Usually a no no, but there was definitely a type of chemistry between Eva and Swede. Swede is a man that's bigger than life, which in my book also means sexy as all get out. Strong, capable and honorable. Eva is smart, loving, stubborn and also full of life. I look forward to reading more. A great add to your tbr list.

Good, short read; solid continuation of the series

The Bronze Key is the third installment for The Magisterium series. It is a powerful addition to the series, and I had been waiting for it and purchased it on the day it came out. With that, keep in mind that this little review is from the point of view of a fan of the series.

This book feels a tad shallow, to be honest. It's writing is light, just a bit too light, and only hints at deeper themes. That's also not a bad thing, because the intended audience is clearly a younger one; perhaps just a few years younger than a Harry Potter audience. It's also terribly short, though that might just be due to the fact that I read through it in one sitting, eating up each page excitedly.

The story, however, is deliciously unique and deliciously interesting. Even as an adult, I find that I love it. This sequel has managed to continue that. A new, intriguing character is introduced-- Anastasia, a mysterious Assembly Mage who seems obsessed with white-- and current characters get more fleshed out. We learn more about Alex, are shocked by criminal acts, feel our trust betrayed, and ultimately follow the story, riveted, because it is interesting.

So it's a good book. I won't go into too much depth, because who needs to read spoilers? But if you've read the first two, and you're fine with the writing being just a bit light (I would personally /love/ this series written with a lot more exposition and depth, but to each their own), then this book will be excellent for you. Particularly if you want to see a bit more of the dynamic for Callum and Aaron, who actually seem to interact more and better in this book than the previous ones.

Short and fun middle grade fantasy read.

This is the third book in the Magisterium series which is planned to have five books in it. This was an excellent continuation of the Magisterium series, I really enjoyed this book a lot. This has been a well done middle grade fantasy series which both me and my 9 year old son enjoy.

We see a lot more of Call and Aaron wielding their Makar talents in this book and learn a lot more about Chaos magic. Call isn’t questioning his evilness quite as much but is still struggling with the idea that he is the soul of an evil mage reborn.

Much of the story is focused on Call, Aaron, and Tamara trying to track down a spy in the school...a spy who may also be a murderer. Some interesting secrets are revealed about Call’s past and Aaron is struggling with what it means to be a Makar.

Overall this is a quick and fun read and I enjoyed it a lot. These characters are fun and engaging and the story takes some unexpected turns throughout. I think fans of middle grade fantasy will enjoy this series a lot. I love the elemental magic in it and how well the writing flows. I am looking forward to see what happens in book four.

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger

Although not as good as previous books and ends on a annoying cliffhanger, still the over all story has kept me engaged and coming back for more. I am starting to take issue with the nature of the books ending unresolved in any reasonable way. I did not really have that problem with the first ones, but this one didn't end. It just dropped you off in the middle of the story like the season end of a tv series. At this point, although I still like the overall story and honestly cannot predict where it is going, I don't want to keep reading books that never end. I also have hesitations in recommending this book for younger students as it is getting very very dark and I am not sure that would be appropriate for their age group. Still, this is the first time the story has "dipped" like this so I am reserving judgement on the whole series until I read the next one.

makes for a poor textbook on computer security

While I can appreciate the need for a grounding in the basics of computer security the author goes about it poorly. The book layout on first pass seems passable with gratuitous usage of charts and visuals, but as the reader goes through the actual information you begin to realize that much of the information is rehashed in various forms. If you were to cut out the added redundancy, the book would be two-thirds it current size.

I also agree with a previous reviewer that some of the information seems a bit contrived or made-up in terms of modern day lingo use. The "drive by hacking" descrip the author uses in chapter two is accurate, but is more prevalently known as wardriving but the author does not identify that to the reader.

One thing the author does do well is reinforce concepts through questions that are interspersed throughout each chapter as well as "Thought questions" at the end of them. This being a first edition, I hope that subsequent editions are improved especially considering the price of the text. As book alternatives, Network Security Bible (basic level) and Security Warrior (intermediate) are good reads at a more palatable price.

Excellent for Management level

I just finished reading this one and I found it to be very helpful for a person trying to find management level understanding of security, I have been working with networking and security for the last 10 years of my life and it has been very helpful to pinpoint several management aspects that technology savvy people (I prefer that over geek) usually don't follow or look at. I enjoyed the explanations, everything was very easy to read and understand, the introduction to cryptography is simply one of the best I have found out there. Again, if you are a technical guru looking for technical advice there is no much use to it in this book, OS, Networks and other practitioner level stuff are not well defined, simply mentioned for reference or examples. Another part I liked about it was the level of detail that the author had to reference the attacks and statistics, which a lot of us love to read and know about. Finally, make sure to get edition 5 of the book, I am referring to edition 4, I am sure that there is a lot to cover in a couple years regarding security and the way to go about it. I got the book from the university package so I wont be getting the new one, it's simply overpriced in my opinion.

The book is not that useful. It has some information but the subjects are told very very slowly. You can just summarize the book in 10 pages or so. Useless...

Adrian Shaughnessy is a self-taught graphic designer, writer, and editor. Until recently he was creative director of Intro, the London-based music design company he co-founded in 1989. He left Intro in 2004 to pursue an interest in writing and consultancy. real indies

There are other wonderfully inspiring album cover showcases, but none that so intimately describe the relationships of designers with indie labels - many of whom also carry the mantle of label proprietor. [Finally I feel like I'm not a complete freak after all]. And what covers! As much as stefan sagmeister will always be the artist who took design for that most hated packaging standard - the CD - to a new level, (as well as being the designer who most challenges us to render with humanity) - here he is absent and this feels like a generation that is moving on. A variety of genres is transversed from electronic through to art music but a common ethos shines through. Unswervingly, the inescapable question is asked of each designer: "How do you feel ahout downloads?".. to which there are a variety of responses and emotions. None of which made me any less excited about this, the worst paid, and most rewarding gig there is.

For the price, I don't see why more people don't have this book. So many 'so so' books about design go far an arm and a leg, this is just great to look at.

This being a diverse collection of eighteen short stories and some poetry about climate change, you may be thinking, geez, not another damper-on-my-day book. Fact is there's some great storytelling in this collection that you might well appreciate — a tantalizing mix for most any palate. The best, to me, in this collection follow the theme in a disarming, subtle way, allowing the reader to bask in immersing stories.

To give you an idea of the range of stories:

There's an odd story with a metaphysical twist, about interviewing a body painting artist, that I thought exceptionally well written. I can't remember last time I came across wit like, "Our Alesha is not only a fully fledged member of the loon family, she also sits on the executive council of The Coalition Against Pipelines, the very epicenter of looniness."

A story said to be inspired by a Twilight Zone episode, much more to me. The insightful writing, prodding the mind to participate without handholding, was simplicity in its expansiveness that I don't see often.

A Sci Fi story with time travel, fans of such can get into. I'm not much of a Sci Fi fan, but this one had an nice sardonic note I enjoyed.

A speculative future story about a grandfather and grandson, that struck me as quality writing in keeping me engaged.

A futuristic-cyber-biker-publishing combo story with an ironic ending. Here again not my usual preference, but engrossing.

An imaginative and entertaining doubles-from-the-future type story, with a zany twist and a scintillating ending.

A speculative fiction piece of man's loss of cultural trappings, regressing to our primitive beings.

And eleven others. There's also a bit of poetry to round out the offering.

The above, of course, what struck me as standing out. Other readers may find something different of interest in the collection, but I doubt will be sorry they picked up the book.
