Well-written, informative sediment and stratigraphy text

This is a very good, thorough, and informative text that covers all the basics of sedimentology and stratigraphy. It is frequently used as a textbook in such classes, including when I took it at Baylor University. It is easy to understand, well-organized, and very clear.

Good book but you'll feel robbed

Let me get this part out of the way quickly: This book was originally $180 (Jan 2014) with similar prices at other sites. I found it for $149.00 at textbook site and alerted Amazon; they quickly lowered it to $149 within a few days (yay Amazon!). Currently, the book is at $122 (March 2014).

The book writing is good. BUT, it lacks in a few areas. My biggest gripe is that for a book of such high price, it has ZERO color photographs! It does have some illustrations, but they are all black and white. To me, this is a huge disappointment, especially in a field like geology, where color is of importance. The book pages have a similar consistency to bible paper with everything black/white. I wanted to throw this book into the fireplace a few times due to no color photographs. Luckily, the book writing is good (and I needed the book). When the book describe soil horizons and colors of each horizon or color of strata bands, you will be disappointed to find a small black and white image. Also, the majority of the photographs that are black and white are of low degraded quality. Some images are senseless, since you cannot distinguish features that are being discussed. If you are a visual learner (most of us are), or like to see color images as you read, the lack of color images may make the book bland during reading. This book should not have been $180, $149, or even $100.

Chapter summaries. The book doesn't have any, but contain 'conclusions' that are really, really concise. Anywhere from 2 sentences to a paragraph. If you are the type to look for summaries a year later or as needed after reading the book, you will NOT be happy.

The book does not have a 'student resource' site. Not that this is a big deal, but most college textbooks have a resource site to view color illustrations (this book need them!), summaries, and other learning activities.

The writing is good. It reads straight through in paragraphs, no learning stuff on the bottom/top corners, no extra boxes anywhere on the pages with 'key terms,' nothing, except black/white figures if the paragraph mention them. The MOST you will get is BOLD letters on some terms. If there was color, somethings could be color-coded. You will learn as you read, but some concepts aren't broken down. You will need a highlighter and take notes to make this book work 100%.

I believe this is like the second book on the market concerning 'sedimentary geology,' so it may be part of the reason why it's pricey and no colors. Yes, I keep mentioning that, I feel "robbed" due to nothing in color!!! Luckily, my professor said great things about Prothero. I'm about to mail his arse a collection of colors and a "Color for Dummies" book!!

Good Book

Required for an undergraduate class, but I definitely keep it around as a reference and refresher. A few small typos I noticed, but no more than any text book.
Be careful if you buy it used, some of the first ones printed on the second edition didn't get the cover spine glued on right - I had friends whose books were literally falling apart after a week. If you send it back to the printers, I think they'll send you a new one, but it's a pain so heads up.

Hmmmm........

Like most of the material written by White Eagle, it seems as if you are listening to his ongoing conversation of questions and answers between himself and Great Pop and of course what you come up with in your own mind as well. Reading this I felt like I was sitting with a good friend, sharing his philosophy on such topics as faith, belief, trust, ghosts, God and an afterlife. There were times where I would catch myself thinking, "What is he getting at here?" or "Where is he going with this and what does it have to do with what we were talking about?" and then right about then he would mention that he was seemingly off track and would come full circle to tie it all together.
All in all, I found the book often quite humorous and very thought provoking and so did not want to put it down once I began reading. He has certainly shown me the How and Why of things that happen in my life. Has he `proven' the existence of God and an afterlife to me? Hmmm... I'm certainly leaning that way....

Using the illustration of the film industry, this book brilliantly shows seemingly complex Buddhist philosophies in way - familiar cinematic context. Some favorite movie scenes suddenly take on new or more clear meaning.

I eagerly awaited this book, but it is somewhat disappointing, though excellent in parts. The best thing about it is that it is full of information about the foreign films and their sources, etc. There is also good discussion of the early silent and sound films using aspects of Buddhism (I'd forgotten about Broken Blossoms). Much of the critique is nothing special, really just plot description and tenuous links to Buddhist themes. For example, the section on Lost Horizon is mostly a plot summary. It is hard to like completely a book on Buddhism in the movies that includes Fight Club but ignores The Seven Samurai, Redbeard (the greatest Zen film ever), and Dodeskaden. And if crappy movies are to be included, where is Kim?

Wonderful articulation of Narrative Therapy that is accessible to both service users and clinicians.

This was my second reading through David's "Retelling the Stories of our Lives." Upon first reading, I was struck by the accessibility of the book as David offers exercises and plain descriptions. This helps facilitate the learning and practicing of Narrative Therapy for both therapists and those looking to respond to problems in their lives.

With my second reading I was drawn deeper into David's attention to the collective elements of Narrative Therapy. His incorporation of audience has always been a part of his work that inspires me to focus more on audiences in my practice and I find myself thinking even more, now, about incorporating teams and collective documents in my work with young people and their families.

Readers might also be interested in David's ideas around trauma and loss. So often our field becomes protective of the way therapists approach therapeutic change with people experiencing trauma and loss. David offers attractive alternatives to traditional models of approaching trauma and loss in a collective style that I'm confident will appeal to many populations. It is refreshing to see the alternatives that David's application of collective ideas to trauma and loss offers to service users and therapists alike.

Whether you've been using Narrative ideas in your work for some time, you are new to narrative ideas, or are interested in using Narrative ideas for change in your life, you should find David's writing wonderfully helpful.

The ideas in this book have been very useful in my work as a therapist and in my life

If you work as a therapist or people consult you about their life in some way, this book can be very helpful. When talks about our life as stories, you are coauthor of them. You learn to offer people who they want to write the story of their life, other people or themselves. It talk of life as a journey, when you have a problem you migrate from one way of being to a way you prefer, preparing yourself for the hard times.
The way it talks about death and grieving in its chapter Hello again, how we want to deal with our loses, we can keep the relationship if we want, we know the person is gone but we can remember how she or he was and could still have a kind of conversation with them.
Talking about trauma, you learn about double listening; the story of trauma and the story of what the person did to deal with it, and how it didm't destroy what is important and precious for them. What was that the person did or how tried to stop it or reduce the effects of trauma, and all this is according to what he or she consider important and valuable.
The book starts with the Tree of Life that is a way of telling the story of your life from what is important to you, your skills, friends, people that had helped you and even pets that are recognized as company and special for some people without pathology them Also the book talks and question about normality and its relation with personal failure.
The book also shares stories of people to support the ideas in it, and to make them clearer.
Is a very good book, good ideas, good examples, clear writing, with new and refreshing ideas.

Very happy I got this book. Easy for just about anyone to understand and relate to. Suggested techniques are very practical and people can just sit down and do them - without "planning ahead" for the right time or any of those other great excuses for not doing anything at all. Real. Useful. Practical. Effective.

This cookbook has something for EVERYONE in my family!!!

I've had this cookbook for a couple of months now. I waited to leave my review until I had the opportunity to test out several of the recipes inside. And I can honestly say that there's not a bad one in the bunch! So far my husband and I (and even my kids) have loved everything we've made from this book. Anyone with picky kids knows what an amazing thing it is, to be able to make one single dinner that pleases every person at the table.

There's such a nice variety of recipes to choose from - burgers, chicken, steak, fish & seafood and even breakfast. I LOVE breakfast food (especially at dinner time) and this cookbook definitely provided me with some new, fresh and original favorites in that department.

And the sauces - oh man! There are some absolutely AMAZING recipes for sauces that you can make that'll compliment just about anything. Even if you already have a time-tested favorite way to prepare your favorite meal, I guarantee that you'll find a sauce in this book that will make it even better!!!!

I highly recommend this cookbook. Order it, and you will not be disappointed!!

The look of this cookbook is amazing. My husband and I just finished our dinner, the lamb sliders. They were so good and the recipe was easy to follow. We also made the tzatziki sauce which went perfectly with the lamb sliders. We felt like we were eating a gyro....but so much healthier.
We can't wait to try another recipe, thank you for sharing your recipes. Soooo good:)

The joy of op amps

I love this book, before jumping into op amps chapter 1 uses amplifier configurations comprised of discrete components to form building blocks, which once put together form an op amp. This approach allows for an understanding of the signals from input to output. Om amps start on chapter 2 analyzing characteristics and then configurations, which are described clearly with all the necessary equations to allow you to customize each configuration to your particular need.
The author uses inexpensive op amps, which allows the reader to build circuits and experiment without fear of damaging an expensive piece of silicon. Go head order a hand full of inexpensive op amps and enjoy this book. Once you you feel comfortable with the circuits in this book, you can move to higher performance more expensive op amps.

Have fun experimenting and designing your own circuits!

On the side note you will need some basic electricity background to appreciate this book. At least you should feel comfortable with ohm's law, kvl, kcl, voltage divider rule and how passive components behave under AC and DC. Some basic circuit analysis also will help, but you might get away without it to get started, for more advanced circuits it will be necessary.
