Talking Pictures: Images and Messages Rescued from the Past, by Ransom Riggs

With the candid quirkiness of Awkward Family Photos and the confessional intimacy of PostSecret, Ransom Riggs's Talking Pictures is a haunting collection of antique found photographs—with evocative inscriptions that bring these lost personal moments to life—from the author of the New York Times bestselling illustrated novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Each image in Talking Pictures reveals a singular, frozen moment in a person’s life, be it joyful, quiet, or steeped in sorrow. Yet the book’s unique depth comes from the writing accompanying each photo: as with the caption revealing how one seemingly random snapshot of a dancing couple captured the first dance of their 40-year marriage, each successive inscription shines like a flashbulb illuminating a photograph’s particular context and lighting up our connection to the past.

About the Author
Ransom Riggs is the New York Times bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the writing of which was largely responsible for his current addiction to old photo collecting. Rather than seek treatment, Ransom channeled his compulsion into the compiling of Talking Pictures, a book he hopes will make you cry, and perhaps find a coveted spot on your coffee table. He lives in Los Angeles, where you can often find him hunting for old snapshots at the monthly Rose Bowl Swap meet.

Whetted my appetite- where's my meal?
By DrBee
When I was a small child in Chicago my parents and I regularly rode the elevated trains through the different neighborhoods. At each stop I could peer across the tracks at people and their back porches and wonder what their lives were like. Whose sled was leaned up on the wall of the porch? Why didn't those people take down their Christmas decorations? Sometimes I would spot a crying child or see what looked like an argument through an apartment window. Or look down on the players on a basketball court- who was playing? Who stood off to the side? What were their conversations about? I enjoyed making up little stories about these "el" people and their lives and wondred what it would be like to be a part of their lives. This collection of photographs gave me the same pleasure. A glimpse into a stranger's life- seeing someone or something that wasn't intended for me to see. Some of the photographs provided a bit of information about what was taking place or what it meant to the subject of the photo. Others raised eerie questions. I enjoyed the book very much and wished that the author had included more photographs. I felt as if I was just getting started when it came to the end.

An intriguing, entertaining page-turner; inspires me to resurrect this valuable ritual!
By Meglet
I enjoyed this "photo album" so immensely I immediately sent a digital gift of it to my mother. It's so incredibly human, proving that our emotions, struggles, joys, sorrows, and laughs are timeless, bonds that reach across decades, even centuries, to tie us together in the experience of life. Ransom Riggs is a rare historian capturing this fragile record of our collective memories, and I applaud his dedication to keeping this rapidly vanishing resource alive.

TALKING PICTURES goes from hilarious to heartbreaking and back again, plus everthything in between. It's as fun to flip through as a family album - only more poignant and irreverent. These resurrected bits of rubbish depict *real* people, are real photos, snapped with purpose, only to become a swirling pile leaves fallen from the family tree, caught on the winds of change and swept up, rescued, and collected by Riggs and his fellow enthusiasts.

I know my own grandparents were guilty of the very crime of tossing out photographs when they moved across the country in '69. I wish I wish they hadn't done that.

I'm going to start turning my digital photographs into real physical prints, and writing on them, too. Riggs is right: this is too important to our history to leave to computers, files, memory cards, flash drives, and Facebook!

I'll be giving a copy of this book to many people on my list this Holiday season. It's so entertaining and enchanting I want to share it with everyone I know.

An Excellent Choice For Anyone Interested In Found Photos
By D. Bass
From cover to cover, this book is filled with fascinating images that are thought provoking and capture the reader's imagination. The author wisely lets the images and their messages do the "talking" and the reader is left to do the interpretation which is the point of the book. As a collector of such images and similar books in this field, I was not disappointed with the "interestingess" of photos included, the arrangement by theme, and the large number of images included. This is the kind of book that you can pick up again and again and discover something new. Destined to become a classic within the field of found/vernacular photography, this book is a keeper and a must have. In short, this book works and works well.

The quality of the reproductions and the printing is very good and for the price it's a real bargain. I purchased additional copies to give as gifts.

A sequel to "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" this book is not (another fascinating book by the way), it was not intended to be. Nor is it an overly wordy or scholarly work on found/vernacular photography, which is a good thing in my opinion. As previously mentioned, the author expertly presents the material and the reader is left to explore the context of each image paired with its message. The images within the book stand on their own and do so superbly. I highly recommend this book, it's a real gem.

5 Stars for sure!
By M. S. Peters
Wow, this book is an encyclopedia dictionary.
It defines every legal aspect that can be thought of, I do believe.
My understanding is that Series 5 and 6 are used currently in most courts.
The later versions have somewhat changed certain meaning to words which changes the law if applied.
Anyway, that's what I have read and that is why I purchased this book version.

great book.

A lot of words, and light weight. Only suggestion: come with tabs to separate the letters. A lot of looking where a word is, but once I put on my own tabs, great book.

Great and Not Overrated
By Matt C.
I'm currently a 1L law student and have used this pocket dictionary a ton since I first got it.

As a student I have access to the online edition through Nexis but I've actually found this to be easier since the search tool is not always as good as you would expect and just getting to the online version can take longer than opening up this book most of the time.

I also am more of a kinetic learner and have found that the print edition helps me to retain better. Plus I just love books so it's more enjoyable to me to look it up in a book than online.

Definitely recommend it. I've found it useful and more importantly more enjoyable than an online version.

Review

From the reviews:

"This is a useful textbook on numerical simulation of fluid motions in a context of their application in various aspects of atmospheric dynamics relevant to global climate models. The author’s aim is not to focus on numerical techniques and mathematical details, instead the reader is approached by clear and readable descriptions of physical processes involved in a particular atmospheric phenomenon." (Vladimir Cadež, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 995 (20), 2002)

"This book is the seventh volume in the series ‘Modeling Dynamic Systems’. … If you are serious with climate modeling, you will love this book. In my view, it marks a real progress as compared to other recent textbooks on much the same topic … . The best aspect of the book is … the beautifully balanced view of the global climate. So, a fine slim book, well embedded into other system modeling treatments, and worth its price." (Michael Hantel, Metereologische Zeitschrift, Vol. 11 (1), 2002)

"Modelling Dynamic Climate Systems attempts to guide the reader into an appreciation of … complex feedback couplings by considering a spectrum of simple models of climate and climate processes. … Modelling Dynamic Climate Systems is an appropriate laboratory companion to a more formal treatment of climate dynamics. Robinson’s contribution to the series Modeling Dynamic Systems provides a basis for developing, through experimentation, a sound conceptual intuition of the (at times) intricate balance between multiple physical processes operating within the climate system." (David Noone, Australian Meteorological Magazine, Vol. 51 (1), 2002)

Excellent atmospheric text supplement for non-majors
By Howard Drossman
This book aims to teach about climate modeling while presenting some fundamentals of atmospheric physics by providing numerous STELLA models ranging from a simple stability model of a leaky bucket to much more complex (and relevant) models for Rossby waves and El Nino. Though the models are not "rigorous", they are intended to show how simplifications can enhance understanding and how some simplifications meet the goals of the model while other times simplifications miss important aspects for accurate models.

For those who are looking for sophisticated programing and modeling approaches, they are sure to be disappointed. However, for those who are either trying to learn or teach basics of climate modeling to those with limited mathematical expertise or teaching students with such limited experience, this book will prove quite useful. The approximately 40 STELLA models included with the book guide the reader to an intuitive understanding of an Earth system approach of atmospheric science. I plan to use a number of examples with a group of students who have only a simple calculus background. Though the text has a 2001 copywrite and the CD-ROM was intended for an earlier version of STELLA, I found that the models could be translated to the newest versions of STELLA on a Macintosh through a fairly simple manipulations and help from software updates provided by High Performance Systems. The text would be useful for junior level classes in atmospheric science aimed at students in environmental science programs. It would be less useful for those with strong math skills majoring in a rigorous atmospheric science sequence, though it could provide such students with a much better conceptual understanding than they might receive in a more mathematically sophisticated class.

An in-depth exploration of women's lives after a natural disaster.

Heads above Water tells the stories of women and their families who survived the Grand Forks, North Dakota, flood of 1997, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. This book describes the challenges women faced and explores the importance of class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability in their disaster recovery. The women found themselves face-to-face with social and familial upheaval, emotional and physical trauma, precarious economic and social status, and feelings of loss and violation. physical trauma, precarious economic and social status, and feelings of loss and violation. By exploring the experiences of these women, author Alice Fothergill contributes to broader sociological discussions about women's changing roles, the stigma of needing and receiving assistance, family relationships under stress, domestic violence, downward mobility, and the importance of "home" to one's identity and sense of self. Heads above Water offers poignant insight into women's everyday lives in an extraordinary time.

“…makes a major contribution to the growing literature on gendered impacts of disaster, both at the scale of the individual/the body and at a larger community scale … This book makes for very compelling reading. Fothergill weaves together individual women’s own stories with a deft hand. Her empirical observations and theoretical insights would be of value to feminist geographers, as well as to those interested in natural disasters and planning. Her book should also inspire further geographical analysis of the gendered impacts of disaster.” — International Feminist Journal of Politics

“Alice Fothergill has performed a great service by reporting about events often overlooked, glossed over, or discounted as fiction that resulted from the 1997 Grand Forks, North Dakota, flood and its impact on local women.” — Great Plains Quarterly

“…does much to advance what is known about women’s experiences in a natural disaster.” — Teaching Sociology

“[Fothergill] charts the physical, psychological, social, and economic effects of the flood on 40 women and their families, using evidence gathered primarily from oral interviews … Fothergill is an engaging writer, and she incorporates the voices of her 40 women frequently in the text. The book provides an important new perspective for a growing field of scholarship.” — CHOICE

"This is the first book of its kind based on the experience of women in disaster. It is an interesting read, and at the same time it has a strong theoretical grounding. This is a rare combination." — Betty H. Morrow, Florida International University

Suffering can depend on many factors
By W Boudville
The black and white photo in the book's cover suggests a decades-past flood. But the episode studied is very recent. The 1997 Grand Forks flood in North Dakota.

Fothergill found a neat way to look at the tribulations of those townspeople. She shows how the experiences were very inhomogeneous. Normally, one might facilely think that in a natural disaster, suffering might be, if not uniformly distributed, then at least randomly so. But here we see that the gender, social class, race and even sexual orientation, can play marked effects on what difficulties a person experiences, and for how long these are endured.

She focuses on women. Since many families suffered, and often, these families had the mothers as the core, holding them together.

The Burning of the World: A Memoir of 1914 (New York Review Books Classics), by Bela Zombory-Moldovan

Publishing during the 100th Anniversary of the First World War

An NYRB Classics Original

The budding young Hungarian artist Bla Zombory-Moldovn was on holiday when the First World War broke out in July 1914. Called up by the army, he soon found himself hundreds of miles away, advancing on Russian lines and facing relentless rifle and artillery fire. Badly wounded, he returned to normal life, which now struck him as unspeakably strange. He had witnessed, he realized, the end of a way of life, of a whole world.

Published here for the first time in any language, this extraordinary reminiscence is a powerful addition to the literature of the war that defined the shape of the twentieth century.

Review
“The literary discovery of the year.” —Eileen Battersby, "Books of 2014"

“A remarkable narrative, a real treasure, a book everyone should read. The Burning of the World is a work of superb reportage as well as being a non-fiction companion volume to Joseph Roth’s classic The Radetzky March … The Burning of the World is a marvellous discovery with a humility and sense of wonder that places it more than the equal of even Robert Graves’s Good-Bye to All That.” —The Irish Times

“[W]ritten with a painter’s eye for colour … [it] matters not only for its literary qualities but also as an evocation of the Austro-Russian theatre (for which we have very few accounts) during the more mobile opening phase of campaigning, when casualty rates were among the highest of the war. … [a] story not only of madness and massacre but also of regeneration.” —David Stevenson, TheFinancial Times

“To a certain extent, World War I memoirs written from the ant’s perspective resemble one another, all mud and horror. What makes this one stand out is the author’s painterly eye for detail, his ability to evoke a vanished way of life, and his tone of voice—gentle and civilized but perfectly capable of the occasional sardonic flash.” —Henrik Bering, The Wall Street Journal

“The pages devoted to the subject [of combat] are brilliant…The strength of this book is as an account [of] the effect of war on one sensitive young man and on everything and everybody.” —Charles Moore, The Daily Telegraph

“To be in a war, within it, to know what that means, to understand the appalling and dreadful significance of all that is appalling and dreadful—such was the fate of this gentle Hungarian painter. This book is perilous reading: the reader is invited, along with the writer, the one who remembers, to take part in what happened. But this is what we must do: from sympathy, from compassion, so that the one who truly lived through all of this will not be so utterly, unbearably alone.” —Lszl Krasznahorkai

“One reads with never-ending curiosity and ever deeper emotion these recollections of the first year of World War I on the nearly forgotten eastern front. Here, instead of trenches, there was constant movement. Vast ill-equipped and ill-trained armies composed of multiple nationalities—among them Russians, Cossacks, Caucasians, Asians, Austro-Germans and Reich Germans, Hungarians, Romanians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes—massacred each other for causes that few involved could understand.” —Istvn Dek, Columbia University

"The writing detailing the author's experiences in battle has an energy and sense of urgency, and the whole book is filled with the understanding that life would never be the same again...recommended for anyone interested in World War I, war memoirs, and the history of eastern Europe." —Library Journal

"...haunting, heartbreaking, and beautifully written...[Zombory-Moldovan's] relatively short exposure to combat is conveyed with an unforgettable intensity. But this is not another chronicle of trench warfare....This is a deeply moving account of a young man's short but terrible plunge into an inferno." —Booklist, starred review

“The Burning of the Worldis a compact self-portrait against a background of carnage and disillusionment.”—Larry Rohter,The New York Times

About the Author
Bla Zombory-Moldovn (1885–1967) was born in Munkcs (now Mukachevo), in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, he established himself as a painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. Wounded in action in 1914 as a junior officer on the eastern front, he served the rest of the First World War in non-combatant duties. He was a successful painter, especially of portraits, during the interwar years, and was the principal of the Budapest School of Applied Arts from 1935 until his dismissal by the Communist regime in 1946. Out of official favor and artistic fashion in the postwar years, he devoted himself to the quiet landscapes in oils and watercolor that are his finest work. The writing of his recently discovered memoirs probably also dates from those years of seclusion.

Peter Zombory-Moldovan has co-translated Arthur Schnitzler’s Reigen and is working on a new version of Bertolt Brecht’s Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches for the English stage. A grandson of Bla Zombory-Moldovn, he lives in London.

"Something had been broken inside me; or perhaps in the whole order of the world."
By John Sollami
One hundred years have passed since Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were shot dead in Sarajevo on June 28. 1914. The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was killed by a separatist who wanted the south Slav provinces to break away and become Yugoslavia. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia, which was squarely behind the assassination plot. Shortly after the war's declaration, word reached Bela Zombory-Moldovan, who was quietly vacationing with family members in a small resort town on the Adriatic Sea. Bela was an avid participant in the cultural and intellectual life of Budapest, an illustrator, painter, and graphic artist. He was not a writer. Within a week from being called up to service, his entire pre-war world had ended, as had the entire world altogether. Zombory-Moldovan's memoir, as translated here by his grandson, Peter, covers the advent of the war and eight months of Bela's hellish experience in battle and his attempt to return to civilian life after being wounded. The shock of it all affected him for the rest of his life. He suffered from what is now labeled post-traumatic stress syndrome. This memoir was not meant to be published and in fact, was only recently discovered locked away in a strongbox. It is altogether fitting that it be published now. It remains thoroughly relevant to today's war-torn world and the soldiers and civilians who are its captives and victims. Although a memoir, this beauifully realized book reads like a piece of literature and reminded me in its descriptive brilliance of Dennis McFarlane's "Nostalgia," which imagines the Civil War trauma of a young, sensitive solider who is quickly wounded, hospitalized, and then attempts to return to civilian life. The difference is that this memoir is real. I highly recommend it to those who want to know what those opening moments of World War I felt like, particularly to an artist.

Another view of the Great War from the soldiers' perspective
By Ronald H. Clark
Among the dozens of books commemorating the outbreak of the Great War in August, 1914, two are unique and deserving of special attention because they are written by actual participants in the carnage. The first is "Fear" by Gabriel Chevalier which I previously reviewed on Amazon. The second just out is a book that had not been previously published until discovered in the author's papers by his grandson. It is Bela Zombory-Moldovan, "The Burning of the World." The first is a highly autobiographical novel published in 1930 by a French veteran. "Burning" is by a Hungarian survivor of the intense battles on the Russian front. Both offer the incredible first-hand perspectives of two soldiers who were there; but they also differ in important ways as well.

"Fear" spends much more time on actual horrific scenes of battle--moving and frightening at the same time. "Burning" is concerned with the severe battle fatigue that the author suffers as he recovers from his wounds and awaits returning to the front. Since the author is a painter, he sees things differently than the French soldier. To be sure there are some fearsome scenes of battle, largely with an enemy who remains unseen. But the readjustment process after the battles, and the psychological effect upon the author, are the real focal points of the book. One wonders if soldiers, especially those severely wounded, ever make a complete recovery; are ever the same person they were before the battles.

This New York Review Books edition contains the components we have come to expect in this fine (and inexpensive) series. The grandson/translator's introduction fills us in about the author, his family background and his postwar career (he died in 1967). There are some maps, a couple of the author's paintings, and some helpful notes which aid in understanding Hungary and the war setting. Particularly interesting is the cover photo, which shows the author on holiday at a beach with friends just days before the outbreak of the war. In fact, the transition from peacetime vacation within the course of a few days to being a soldier at the front is one of the most remarkable aspects of the book. It is also interesting to note that much like the French civilian population, all gung ho to fight the Germans, so too the Hungarian population is enthusiastic about the war and expects a quick victory. But of course, it was not to be. Both books, much like their historical counterparts, are full of criticisms of wasteful and inept high command leadership.

The weighty historical studies recently issued explain what happened on a macro basis. These two books look at the war from the perspective of the individual soldier caught in a worst hell than he ever could have imagined. Both kinds of books are essential to understanding the Great War; but "Burning" is essential to "feeling" what it was all about. We are fortunate indeed that the author left his unpublished manuscript behind and that his grandson, living in England, found it and undertook such a skillful translation.

A Memoir of a Man Wounded in War, and its Aftermath
By John Mccarthy
I share the sentiments of the three 'Five Star' reviews already published.

But let me add this:

First, reading the book's intro by the author's grandson, Peter Zambory-Moldavan, is vital to appreciating this text to the fullest. Not only does it provide a snapshot of the author's background as well as the context of this memoir, but it also carries the reader forward with a glimpse of the rest of the life of the admirable author of this magnificent read.

For the book itself covers only 8 months of the author's life from the day he discovered while on vacation that he had been drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army through the time of training and then when he was wounded in battle and concluding in the period when he was painfully and fitfully readjusting to his own personal post-war life.

Sadness is the prevailing emotion of this book...Sadness relating to the end of his prewar life; sadness with respect to his leaving the home of loving parents, especially his father; sadness experienced in the helplessness of men caught dead center in the midst of a withering artillery attack. It is the sadness of a sensitive human being whose life has moved totally beyond his own control.

The rest of the book narrates the author's traumatic return to life after the Russian attack in which he was wounded. This is the story of the journey back from the horrific, dumbfounding experience of a battle against an unseen, unknown enemy. It is also the painful personal story of a recovery never fully completed. The author feels that his entire life has been ruptured in ways beyond his and, of course, our understanding. He feels, as so many severely wounded soldiers feel, alien to all around him who cannot possibly understand, as he himself cannot understand, what happened to him in the catastrophic moments of battle.

This is a book which, for obvious reasons, is as relevant today as it was back in 1914 when the events of 'The Burning of the World' transpired.

I recommend this short book unequivocally.
