Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888), which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the books rapidly over several months at the request of her publisher. The novel follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood, and is loosely based on the author and her three sisters. Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, and readers demanded to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume, entitled Good Wives. It was also successful. The two volumes were issued in 1880 in a single work entitled Little Women. Alcott also wrote two sequels to her popular work, both of which also featured the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Although Little Women was a novel for girls, it differed notably from the current writings for children, especially girls. The novel addressed three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity." Little Women "has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth", but also "as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well". According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from Romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new format. Elbert argued that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the "All-American girl" and that her multiple aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters.

perennial favorite for the ages

A very early reader, I received a copy of "Little Women" at age 7. From the very first time I read this lovely book, I fancied myself as Jo, and so thoroughly identified with her that even through all the succeeding decades and thousands of other books read, this book will remain one of my top five favourite books because of her. I read and reread this book sitting in a big apple tree in my parent's back yard, laying on the grass on a summer's day, and under the sheets with a flashlight I now suspect my parents knew I had stashed under my bed.

In an age of easily digested and mass-produced books with weak characters and plot, "Little Women" is a stand-out that resists the passage of time for its exemplary characters, theme of family unity, and love on so many different levels (friendship, familial, true love, and romantic love).

Readers today might find the writing and occasional chirpiness of the March sisters when faced with their poverty a bit difficult to relate to, but knowing stories of how my own mother and sisters faced the Depression and then WWII in the UK made me realise from an early age that trying to find things to rejoice in is essential to surviving tragedy and loss on a personal level.

The March sisters encapsulate female society in most countries even now, and are well-written individual characters, each with a different goal they wish to fulfil in life. The girls do not become career women, and their parents do preach the importance of family life and sacrifice, however, each one does what was expected of young girls at that time. Jo's daring in writing a sensationalist "man's" story and insisting on payment commensurate with a man was unheard of in those days and when one considers that women are still underpaid, it makes Jo's triumph still relative today. Amy's goal of being comfortably well-off is eventually tempered by her own personal sorrow at the poor health of her own little Beth, Meg wants to be a mother and wife, and she learns not to overachieve, and Beth who overcomes pathological shyness through her altruism and empathy for others and which leads to her death is still inspirational today.

My suggestion is that if you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter or friend, take turns reading it. It will improve your vocabulary, make you smile, and dear Beth's stoicism will bring a tear to your eye.

Horrible edition

I am not rating this novel because of the amazing story, but because of the edition. Please do yourself a favor and do NOT buy any books from CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. There's no format in this book. It literally looks like somebody found the story on some website and did a copy and paste. Even the cover is horrible, it is very low quality. If you want this book please search for "Little Women (Oxford World's Classics)" or Penguin's Classics. Those editions are 100x better and are also cheaper than the CIPP edition.

Classics are sometimes best

I read "Little Women" when I was in junior high school and I loved the book. I decided to re-read it and I am glad I did. So much fiction today is lacking in plot, character development, and thought, in short, this is good literature. This is one of the best books around for people of all ages. I so appreciate that the March family experienced the joys and pains of everyday living and handled both with dignity, spirit, and a genuine love for each other. Even though poor, the March family rose above it. So many lessons are taught in this book that young people, particularly, could benefit from reading it. I will add this to my reading list of books that I read every couple of years!

I want a Gabriel!!

What can I say? Gabriel’s Treasure is a journey about the possibility of losing the most important person in your world. It’s a story of strength, love, and faith. About how a big Alpha male can be brought to his knees by this love. This is definitely a must read and be ready for an emotional read!

Gabriel and Fern had been a couple since high school and were hopelessly in love with each other. Happy, in love and then their world was turned upside down. Fern was diagnosed with cancer and was having to undergo chemo therapy

Most of us really don’t get the whole picture of how being treatment for cancer impacts the lives of those going through it. Their fears and how family and friends are sometimes the only link to the world outside of the confines of the hospital room and feeling of living a complete life
Throughout this book Gabriel was truly Fern’s lifeline.
He was so loving and took such good care of her and her needs. All alpha tendencies put aside to show her the gentleness she needed but there as a support to help her make decisions. He was always there to reinforcing any doubts that would cloud her thoughts. Their strong MC family always stepped up to the task at hand, no matter what the need, no questions asked. It was really cool to see how the MC was shown as such a strong family unit too.

A heartfelt and emotional read but so good!!

Amazing story about love, family and dealing with cancer. D.M.Earl wrote a fantastic story filled with emotion. Doc and Fern were a lovely couple & it was heartwarming to see how people become family.

finding words to express what I want to say. this one was out of this world, it touched on a subject that is very hard for people to talk about much less read. I have to say I cried so much while reading this. she did an amazing, phenomenal job of writing, much less touching upon all these other topics that we as people do not always want to talk about. this is one of those that will pull at your heart strings, it will forever stay with you because it touches on so many subjects. I am telling you, you have to read it for yourself to truly understand what an amazing job she did, and how moved you will be. this story, these characters are like no one else, you will feel like something that you have never felt before. So, believe me when I say, you have to read this one with a box of kleenex, and it is a MUST READ, you will NEVER, be the same...for it touch's us like NOTHING else, and is one that move you like no other, you will be there every step of the way with them, you will cry, you will laugh, you will share in every one of there moments, that is how much she pulls you in...

Book arrived on time but not as advertised (claimed it was new but had marking in it when I go it). Too bad it is a little hard to return it since I need to book now, but oh well I just need to make do with what I have now.

DECEPTIVE !

When I went looking for this I entered KJV ER Bible. So when the page came up I decided to pick this one. I have to confess that I was not paying attention so I did not realize that it wasn't an ER version so when it came it was loaded with Thee, Thou and Thy's which really upset me. Since I put in the box KJV ER Bible I assumed that they would only give me the ER version. I feel that Amazon was very deceptive in their diplays and it made me want to write them off as a place that has no integrity. I will be extremely cautious from now on.

Raymond and Furugh Switzer are both trained in Imago Couples Therapy and often work together in couples counselling. They have given numerous seminars and workshops on courtship, marriage and parenting across Europe. Raymond is a psychologist from Canada; Furugh a sociologist from Iran. They share the same alma mater, have been married for twenty-two years, and currently live in Hungary. Mindful Matrimony, by Raymond and Furugh Switzer, would be a good a marriage manual, except for one glaring, unconscionable flaw, which renders the book worse than useless: the authors assert, “…(W)e believe that there should be transparency within the marriage in all areas of our relationships with others. We do not believe that reading our spouse’s email messages, text messages, or list of mobile calls need constitute a boundary violation of the individual...(E)verything we say or do should be something we would not want to hide from our spouse.” (Mindful Matrimony, pp. 82-83.)
This advice is a recipe for spousal over-control and abuse.
In support of their assertion, the authors offer no foundation in professional literature. They rely entirely upon a single statement, incorrectly asserted to be a teaching of the Baha’i Faith. The statement is this: “Let there be no secrets from one another.” This statement was attributed to the renowned teacher of the Baha’i Faith, Abdu’l-Baha. Yet the statement was never authenticated as a true utterance of Abdu’l-Baha. Moreover, the source of this hearsay is a highly unreliable individual, Ahmad Sohrab, who later became well-known for misrepresenting the teachings of the Baha’i Faith.
In addition, Abdu’l-Baha’s life and teachings demonstrate the exact opposite of the authors’ advice. Abdu’l-Baha affirmed the dignity of each family member, and noted that each has rights which must not be transgressed. “The integrity of the family bond must be constantly considered and the rights of the individual members must not be transgressed. The rights of the son, the father, the mother -- none of them must be transgressed, none of them must be arbitrary.” (Selections from the Writings of Abdu’l-Baha, The Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 168). Lady Bloomfield recounts an incident in which Abdu’l-Baha arranged for the delivery of a dying man’s bequest to his daughter, in a manner to assure that the her abusive husband would not learn about the bequest. (The Chosen Highway, p. 102).
The practices of Baha’i institutions affirm that there may be situations in which it is necessary or prudent to keep certain information confidential, such as a person’s address and contact information, even from family members.
I hope the authors will revisit this portion of their book and provide guidance based on the true teachings of the Baha’i Faith, which conform to reason and common sense, as well as to the informed opinions of professionals in the field of domestic violence.
