About the Author
Stephen Johnson studied genetics at Cambridge University before qualifying as a solicitor in 1982. He subsequently also qualified as an attorney and worked in the US for Kirkland & Ellis LLP for over thirty years, most recently in San Francisco. He now focuses on intellectual property (IP) from a business perspective and also consults for the US charity One Mind on IP and other policy issues affecting neuroscience research.

In 2015 he was named as one of the world’s leading IP strategists by Intellectual Asset Management in its IAM Strategy 300 survey.

About the Author

Biswamoy Pati is Reader in the Department of History at Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi University, India. His research interests focus on colonial Indian social history and recent publications include an edited book, The Nature of 1857 (2007), and a book co-edited with Waltraud Ernst entitled India’s Princely States: People, Princes and Colonialism (2007).

Mark Harrison is Professor of the History of Medicine and Director of the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at Oxford University. His publications include Public Health in British India (1994), Climates and Constitutions (1999) and a co-edited book with Biswamoy Pati, Health, Medicine and Empire (2001).

Lay Your Head Upon This Pillow

Having been a fan of McDonagh's Leenane Trilogy, I couldn't wait to read his latest. I'd read some glowing reviews from the British premiere but was skeptical. Then, I read the play. While the set up seems from a police procedural, the twists, turns, and utter horror in the play are visceral and compelling.

A writer is being interrogated because the stories he writes often allude to the murder of children in hideous ways; children in the totalitarian state of his residence are now being killed in ways like the ones mentioned in the writer's work. Add to this the writer's mentally impaired brother and occasional acting out of his stories and you have complete, satisfying, darkly humorous and utterly theatrical play. The Pillowman is a beautifully ugly depiction of the the necessity of stories--to pain us, to heal us. It's quite a page-turner!

Wow

During my recent visit to London I was privileged to attend a show every one of my thirteen days there. After seeing everything from Taming of the Shrew to Pinter's Betrayal, the only show that made me say, "Wow that was incredible", was McDonough's The Pillowman. I find my self uttering the same phrase after reading a previous review of this amazing play. It's such a shame that people get so caught up in the superficial aspect of art that they fail to understand what makes it art in the first place. Shocking, twisted, dark as it may be, when it comes down to it, The Pillowman has nothing to do with murdering children. Any person with some sense can understand that it's about an artist's responsibility for their work and their protection under freedom of speech laws. Can an artist be held accountable for the feelings their work provokes? What if someone acts on those feelings...who is responsible then? I find it ironic that the very point the playwright is trying to get across mirrors the persecution he is facing now. To everyone... see this play. If you are unable to attend a production that's a shame because it's amazing live, but do the next best thing and pick up the script. It will change you.

It Really Must Be Seen...

I'm usually one of those irritating people who insist on reading the text before seeing the play or movie, but I'll admit that this was not the case. In fact, quite the opposite. I had seen the production at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago with it's incredible cast, fell in love with the piece, and consequently had to buy the play.

Martin McDonagh, a prized playwright with a biting and controversial wit for the stage, has absolutely nailed a generation piece with his play, The Pillowman. As anyone in theatre will tell you, it's all about the journey. Katurian has had an interesting journey, and his circumstances proved to be even more interesting at the beginning of the play. The cold, desolate, and unforgiving world he's a part of accuses him of a heinous crime, leaving him thinking it was merely his stories he wrote that encouraged other acts of crime...

He and his brother selectively retell their story through Katurian's stories that act as tiny plays-within-the-play and give the reader / audience member a clearer understanding of the context.

Kind of a side-note, if I may. I was fortunate enough to see the production at the Steppenwolf in Chicago because of my University's Theatre Department that paid for it, and there were about 120 of us that were in the audience that night. The Steppenwolf has a talk-back with the actors that we were very much looking forward to, ready to pick the minds of the actors who were fortunate enough to perform this biting piece.

One of the first questions that the artistic director was faced with from an older audience member was why people were laughing during the show... This sentiment was shared with about 3/4 of the talk-back audience of around 200 or so in the theatre, and the artistic director kind of got the 'deer-in-headlights' look about him as he explained a little about the piece to the patrons. In response to their question, one of our students approached it in the sense of irony and absurdity that ran rampant throughout the text. It's funny because it's so far-fetched, but at the same time so relevant to our generation and society that it was like looking at certain portions of ourselves on stage when looking at the characters.

Another little gem, one of the actors told us in the talk-back, was that one of the original actors playing Katurian had asked during rehearsals if there were more stories where these came from... Martin McDonagh was in the house that evening and told him simply, yes. The next day he brought in all over 200 stories that he based this play on and set them on the stage. Some were typed, some were hand-written, some on napkins and scraps of paper... but they were all there.

The stories are real, the journey that the audience and reader alike experience is real, and in the theatre, you couldn't ask for anything better.

Head of the Class

I have a vast library of Excel manuals. My usual go to one is the Missing Manual. But for learning Excel (2013) quickly, the Smart Method is excellent. Each page is a lesson. You ramp up in skill and knowledge at a diliberate pace. The writing is clear as well as the diagrams. The font is a perfect size unlike another Excel manual I reviewed some months ago. If you are new to this version of Excel or want to improve upon your current skill set, then give this manual a try. I am sure you will find it extremely useful. It is better than the "Dummies" series, "Step by Step" or "Visual" series of books.

Must buy!

This is an awesome book. I needed to learn Excel in the shortest time possible. I first bought the Excel 2013 for Dummies, read it, and it was a waste of time. Too much verbiage, not enough practical information. Didn't come with any sample files. My perception is that the Dummies series is written in such a way as to be cute, but it isn't. MIke Smart's book is right on point. It's what I was really looking for. It's very practical, you can learn an awful lot in a short time, and it comes with many sample files that you download that you can practice on, step by step. It's a great buy, and it's inexpensive. I'm just sorry that I didn't come across it first before I spent the money on the Dummy book.

This book exceeds my expectations. It is more than worth what you pay for it! I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter what your level of understanding using Excel. You cannot beat the learning experience in this and the expert skills book.

Cliff Ruggles has more than 20 years' experiene in custom building transmissions. He owns his own business, Cliff's High Performance, which specializes in building high-performance engines, transmission, and carburetors. Cliff has built/ owned/ raced at least half a dozen cars over the years.

A wealth of hard to find information.

Having chatted with Cliff previously via email, I was happily surprised that he had finally put his wisdom to paper. While it's clear when reading this book that he is a Pontiac fan, he does a good job on the Chevy, Buick, and Oldsmobile Quadrajets also.

In this book you'll find practical rebuilding, repairing, and performance tips. I really like the fact that he covers the repairs that often have to be made to the venerable Quadrajet, now that the one that is on our vehicles is probably well over 30 years old! If you are wondering how to repair that stripped fuel inlet thread, or how to modify your idle air bypass, you will find that information in this book. Not only does this book do a fantastic job covering repairs and performance modifications in depth, the photo's are large, detailed, and relevant.

Discussion of operation of the various circuits is included. The various models and improvements over the years is explained. With this info you will be well prepared to select the right Q-jet for your vehicle.

This work on Rochester carbs is important because the Rochesters, especially the Quadrajet, are vastly underated. There is a very good chance that you could run a Quadrajet on your vehicle and gain fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. In this day and age, that is no small consideration. On a 327 Chevy I've run three Quadrajets (7045263, 7043250, and 7029207) against an out of the box fresh Holley 6619. The best Quadrajet, which happened to be new also, beat the Holley on an identical course by about two miles per gallon with no perceived loss of performance! One of the other Qj's was new also, the other one was rebuilt to stock specs on the primary side, and richened up on the secondary side. The bottom line is that out of the three Quadrajets tested on my vehicle, three of them beat the Holley in the mpg category. Of course, your results may differ, but my point is that you should not overlook the Quadrajet when planning your next street engine build. My motivation to run the Quadrajet came largely from Doug Roe's book, however, there are a lot of points in this work that do not appear in the book by Doug Roe. If you do a search you can find further results from my "test" online. Just type in the carburetor numbers and Holley.

Even if you already have Doug Roe's book on Quadrajets, you'll want this one too. Besides the wealth of photographs, and up to date information, you'll notice that he even covers the Edelbrock Quadrajets as well. Lot's of information for the money.

Excellent help and information

Having run and enjoyed Q-jets for many years I bought this book immediately. Even if you have the Rochester book by Doug Roe, this is a needed addition. True hands on experience shows and Ruggles is able to convey some complex procedures with success. From a simple rebuild to advanced tuning you'll find plenty of help. Pictures are good and clear, but the captions are another story. Here's where I dropped one star in my review. You can figure out the intent with a little study but it seems the publisher rushed the set-up and printing. For instance, the 'left' carburetor is sometimes the 'right' one. Picky perhaps but it is sometimes confusing. All in all a good book.

Book is great, but there is more

The book is great. Very detailed and loaded with great information. My only problem is that I contacted a vendor that is mentioned in the book concerning rebuild kits. The Carburetor Shop in Eldon, MO is mentioned as " a great provider of quality rebuild kits." I contacted them concerning a kit for the carburetor I am rebuilding. Horrible, I mean HORRIBLE customer service. Do not, once again DO NOT purchase anything from that company. I will keep their emails for reference for anyone who does not believe me. Sorry to stray from the book review. The book is great and I would recommend it to anyone, but buy your parts somewhere else.
