About the Author
Ariana Bundy is a French-trained chef, TV presenter and the author of Sweet Alternative, the first gluten, dairy and soy free dessert cookbook. An Iranian-American, Ariana was Head Pastry Chef for the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Paris and studied International Marketing and Finance at EBS in London. Ariana is fluent in English, French and Farsi. She now lives between Dubai and Paris with her husband Paul and their son Dara.

A Perfect Persian Rose

If memories can be captured in words, then this beautifully illustrated volume takes the reader on a journey back to pre-revolutionary Iran, where the author's family lived in a privileged world of vast land estates, high government positions, servants, European clothes, French restaurants, casinos, vacation homes on the Caspian Sea, hunting, riding, & family gatherings at holiday feasts. Not exactly just plain folk, her grandmother's aunt as a young girl lived with the Shah's sister, Ashraf & stayed with her as friend & confidante until Ashraf's death. One uncle became a Sufi and spent the rest of his life helping the sick & needy. Family photos confirm the fabled beauty of Iranian women - the author's mother looks like a young Claudia Cardinale. When the revolution came & the family had to flee, eventually coming to America, they took with them the gift they thought most practical -- caviar! The recipes reflect that lifestyle, with some being very simple, like chicken stew (Khorakeh Morgh), and others more elaborate like Quails stuffed with Rose Petals (Belderchineh Too Por). As with most Persian recipe books, the cook has to either have access to a Middle Eastern store where you can get some of the ingredients needed, like Omani limes, nigella seeds, Persian golden dried plums, barberries, beetroots, green unripe almonds, lavashak (Persian fruit roll), hogweed powder, or get them online. Saffron threads are used extensively in this cuisine, which must be inexpensive in Iran as opposed to the States, as is the use of Pomegranates, which are plentiful in Iran, while we can only get them here in the States in season. The family photos are evocative of the pre-revolutionary time among the wealthy and represent her family's memories of what Iran was once like for those lucky enough to have that lifestyle. But there's history too among the memories, of how things were done in the "old country", when cooking from scratch was the only way and the young women of the house learned by observing how things were done by watching the aunties & the family cook, such as boiling down pomegranate juice to make pomegranate molasses and sour cherry jam. Some family heirloom recipes are included, such as Baked Eggs with chicken, nutmeg & cloves (Kuku Ye Chekhertmeh). Most intriguing recipe is Wild Orchid Ice Cream (Bastaniyeh Akbar Mashti), which requires salep powder, the powdered root of the wild orchid, which is sold in packets in Middle Eastern shops. Because many of these dishes cannot be found in present day Persian restaurants which have become very Americanized & emphasize kabobs, it's worth the trouble to try and make some of these dishes at home. A lovely cookbook to add to your collection if you like Middle Eastern cuisine & enjoy reading about how different cultures add to the richness of a nation's cuisine.

Pomegranates and Roses

Ariana Bundy has written a unique and very special Persian Cookbook, and Family Memoir. The book is filled with lovely and charming photographs, and family tales as well as wonderful recipes. Everything I've made from Pom and Roses has been excellent and the recipes are becoming are favorites, and in every case I've prefered Ariana's version to other similar Persian recipes. I have many other Persian cookbooks, but I would give this book top marks, it's an excellent cookbook and family memoir. It's a cookbook to savour , read, and treasure, Ariana's very special book will I think appeal to both Persians and non- Persians. Ariana should be very proud of this beautiful and very special book loaded with wonderful recipes. This is an absolutely wonderful Persian Cookbook.

The diversity of content, the mix of modern-traditional design and its amazing photography has made it such a pleasant book to read, or shall I say, such a companion to have. Above all, personalising it by telling the tales of writer's family... It's a cocktail of a cookbook and one of stories.

I believe Roses and Poms is destined to make Persian cuisine international. Iranians will be proud of what they see and non-Iranians delighted of what they will discover! This is simply magnificent and a world-class work (no wonder Simon & Schuster went for it!)

Solid Introduction

I learned fluid mechanics from this book in college, tutored undergraduates with the help of this book in grad school, and used it as a reference for my advanced fluids class. In all cases, it was clearer and more understandable than other references I was recommended. I'm not saying this book is perfect - the description of the Navier Stokes equations, a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics, skips too many mathematical steps, as White is prone to do - but overall, if you are strong enough in math, this is a very good reference/first time book for fluid mehanics. White also has a good more advanced text on viscous fluid flow. If you are learning fluid mechanics for the first time, I would also recommend a Schaum's outline to supplement your textbook.

I was a part time instructor over the summer at a certain university in Midwest and found this book extremely difficult to teach from. Though the equations are correct and elegant but author makes huge leaps from the mathematical vector equations in theory to simplified equations in an inconsistent manner. This makes instructors' life hard as he has to fill in missing steps for many solved problems in the book. After reviewing all the undergrad textbooks on fluid mechanics, I would recommend people to use Introduction to Fluid Mechanics by Fox and McDonald. This book can be easily read and followed by the student while leaving instructor(like myself) for more time to elaborate on theory in detail.

Instructors have told us that students are finding books too large. However, they want their students to have access to important reference material. To achieve both these goals, we have eliminated the chapters on Graphs and Diagrams and Alignment Charts included in the last edition, and included them in Adobe pdf format on a free CD. This CD also contains over 30 animations of graphics concepts. INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL WITH SOLUTIONS/RESOURCE CD

This new manual prepared by Tom Kane of Pueblo Community College includes outlines, teaching tips, extra quiz questions, and other tools designed to aid in class preparation. In addition, this manual comes with a new CD-ROM containing answer files for over 450 Giesecke drawing problems. The problems are in both dwg and dwf form for easy electronic access and display. This CD also includes pdf files of all art in the text for quick integration in course web pages. Instructors have long asked for this supplement and we are happy to provide it with the new edition.

This rating doesn't have anything to do with the book - it came in great condition - my problem was I ordered two books and only got one. Understanding things can get mixed up in transit (or whatever), I waited a month or so before sending an email asking about the book. I was hoping to get a quick response but never got one (I think?). It is what it is. Anyway, this is an awesome book for anybody looking for an introduction to drafting standards/methods; I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about a starting position in the technical/mechanical drafting field. The book offers a lot of great visualization exercises that involve different follow-along practice methods for complex modeling.

Not real happy

The book arrived on time and for that I have no problem, the shipping service worked great. My unhappyness results from the book not being complete. During a recent classroom session we were directed to turn to the appendix, imagine my dismay when the appendix was not in the book. A further review of the book revealed several of the photos were not present and in place of the photo "FPO" in place of the graphics.

I looked down once when I was on page 77 and only a moment later I was on 238. I usually read about 12 pages and never finish!

In a Christian blog/book world where I often feel like I'm walking through that row of "look over here," "this will change your life," "you HAVE TO try this," kiosks at the mall, where one size does not fit all, this book really fits.

Stephanie invites the reader into her heart and mind during a host of exciting/embarrassing/interesting, as well as everyday, experiences, including her failed blind dates. But refreshingly, she never tries to wrench the reader to try what she tried, or do what she did. She recounts how she began to recognize and acknowledge God in her life without her circumstances actually changing - which is encouraging to anyone looking for movement in an unmoving area - simply by adjusting how she saw things. There were themes about hope and prayer that I'm learning in my own life right now that were unmistakably nailed in this book - helping me recognize and acknowledge God at work even when my circumstances haven't changed either.

This collection of stories is interesting, well-crafted, and keeps moving you forward with her on a journey that you feel welcomed to join her on. Stephanie is relatable and likable, while being wise and polished (though she'd never claim either of those.) What a great read!

Refreshing and lovely

As someone who was single into my thirties, I struggled to find books or voices that matched my experience. I wanted to be married and often found myself lonely as the people in my life seemed to be moving on without me, but I also had a full and mostly happy life. This book is exactly what I was looking for. There’s a great C.S. Lewis line that says friendship begins when one person says to another, “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” This book is one experience after another of “What! You too?” for single women looking for a friend along an uncharted and sometimes bewildering journey. Stephanie Rische’s writing is refreshingly honest about both the highs and lows of her story; she doesn’t wallow, or try too hard to make everything cheerful and easy. And I so appreciate the way she finds humor and joy and evidence of God’s work and presence along the way. This book will encourage me to look for glimpses of God’s grace in everyday life, no matter what kind of season I’m in.

So much more than you think!!

Yes, I'm married, but I have children of marrying age, so I wanted to take a peek at Stephanie's book. I was very pleasantly surprised to find so much more than dating advice in these pages! I found humor, wit, faith, and sound advice for living life fully rather than waiting for that 'something' or 'someone' to come along.

This young woman is a gifted writer, and has incredible insight. Stephanie shares about some disastrous blind dates, but more importantly she shares honestly about her life and lessons she's learned along the way.

Did you know your couch can reveal if you are living life on hold or to the full? Are you waiting for that special someone? Or for your children to 'grow up'? For the grandchildren to learn to use a cup properly? For the dog to pass on?

Why wait? Get that new couch, that new hairstyle, go for that job, be that friend. Jesus came to give us the ability to live life well and to the full, but we put artificial check points in our paths that don't need to be there at all.

Stephanie also talks candidly about loneliness, being in the friend stage of life while those around you are moving into new stages, and how to not only live but to thrive regardless of your season. I really enjoyed her book, and I'm busy checking out her blog! Definitely high hopes she writes more in the future--she would rock a novel!

About the Author

Mandip S. Kang, MD, FASN, received his fellowship in nephrology from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina. In addition to being board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, he has taught at medical schools since 1996. While people diagnosed with CKD need to know that it is considered a lifelong condition, they also need to know that this disorder is absolutely manageable. Underlying causes can be addressed, and a healthier lifestyle can be adopted with an eye toward slowing the progression of the disease. When someone is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, kidney specialists and nutritionists emphasize the importance of diet to prevent the worsening of the disease, and to avoid the symptoms and complications that can develop due to this lifelong problem. Too often, though, patients find the information given to them inadequate or confusing, especially when several different disorders are involved, each with its own dietary limitations. The purpose of this book is to fill that information gap and empower you to improve your health through the foods you eat and the lifestyle changes you make. The facts and recommendations found in this book have been culled from scientific studies, from the expertise of a panel of nutritionists, and―perhaps most important―from years spent treating thousands of people with kidney disease.

Part One of this book focuses on the kidneys―both their function and their dysfunction―and on the importance of diet in the treatment of CKD. It lays the groundwork of information you need to manage chronic kidney disease.

Chapter 1 reviews the vital tasks performed by the kidneys. This information is important because the goal of CKD treatment includes―although it is not limited to―compensating for the tasks that your kidneys can no longer perform. Understanding kidney function is basic to understanding the management of kidney disease.

Once you’ve learned about the work performed by the kidneys, you’ll be ready to learn what happens when the kidneys are less able to do their job. Chapter 2 focuses on the nature, causes, and stages of chronic kidney disease. It also introduces you to your essential role as a member of your own healthcare team.

In Chapter 3, the spotlight is on nutrition. Which nutrients may have to be limited in your diet, and why? Which foods can cause further kidney damage, and which can actually help you safeguard kidney function? Chapter 3 lays out the facts and also explores important topics such as using vitamin-minerals supplements, choosing healthy beverages, dining out, and more.

Many people think that there is only one “renal diet”―one eating plan that is right for everyone with CKD. The truth is that, depending on the stage of CKD, any concurrent medical conditions, and other factors, your doctor may recommend one of several diets, or may combine two or more diets to meet your special needs. Chapter 4 not only explains the diets that are most commonly prescribed for people with CKD, but also provides valuable tips for successfully using each plan to manage your health.

Dietary changes are of crucial importance to everyone with CKD, but beyond diet, there is much you can do to manage your CKD. Chapter 5 focuses on the many healthy lifestyle changes you can make, from getting regular exercise to limiting the use of alcohol and caffeine. Some of these changes may be easy to implement, and some may prove more challenging, but all can make a positive difference in the way you feel on a daily basis as well as in your long-term health.

Although it’s important to understand the “whys” of making smart food choices, I know that dietary principles alone won’t help you feel better. You need to put those principles into practice by making and enjoying kidney-friendly dishes. That’s why Part Two of The Doctor’s Kidney Diets offers over fifty dietitian-created recipes designed specifically for people with CKD. From breakfasts to desserts, from side dishes to snacks, these dishes are not only easy to follow but also easy to love. Each one starts by listing the specific diets with which they are a good match and ends by listing Nutritional Facts, including calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. You’ll even find the Diabetic Exchanges per portion. This takes the guesswork out of finding appealing dishes that match your dietary needs and restrictions. Keep in mind, though, that all dietary decisions should be made under the guidance of your healthcare team. I urge you to share these recipes with your doctor and dietitian so that you can determine together how the dishes can be incorporated into your menu plan.

I’ve tried to make the information in this book easy to understand and to keep my use of medical terminology to a minimum. But some special terms are necessary to explain kidney function, kidney disease, and nutrition. With this in mind, I’ve created a Glossary (page 171) that explains the terms used in this book as well as the terms you’re likely to hear when working with your healthcare team. Turn to it whenever you want to double-check the meaning of a health-related word or phrase.

Throughout this book, I emphasize the importance of understanding your condition and its treatment. My experience has been that knowledge and active involvement in your healthcare plan are the keys to a good outcome. This book provides a great start, but you’ll want to keep adding to your knowledge. That’s why I have compiled a comprehensive Resources list (see page 183), which guides you to solid sources of information on kidney-friendly diets, specific foods and nutrients, laboratory tests, and other aspects of CKD treatment, as well as treatment for related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The websites and organizations listed in the Resources section can provide you with the information you need to begin the successful management of your condition and to face any new challenges you may encounter along the way.

In my practice, I have seen my patients reap the benefits of dietary and lifestyle changes―as well as patient education regarding the disease process―and these benefits have often been significant. In many individuals, kidney function has stabilized; in others, the time from diagnosis to dialysis has been greatly prolonged. It is my hope that, armed with The Doctor’s Kidney Diets, you will be able to enhance your long-term health and manage, slow, or even halt the course of chronic kidney disease.

A life-changing collection of facts, tips, and recipes to help protect kidney function.

This is an incredibly helpful, empowering guidebook that combines crucial background information with a definitive dietary approach to managing kidney disease. Written in a manner that's straightforward and easy to understand, this book will enable anyone facing the potential for, or diagnosis of, CKD to learn from Dr. Kang's expertise and take control of their health. The book explains the particulars of kidney function, kidney disease, and related health conditions and teaches why and how to assess the quality of the foods and nutrients in your diet. It offers key advice about healthful lifestyle changes and provides an extensive Resources section.A wonderful addition is the book's Recipe section, created by dietitians and presenting simple instructions, dietary and nutritional facts, and diabetic exchanges for a collection of healthy, delicious dishes. This book may have been written for people with or at risk of kidney disease, but it's a vital resource for anyone who wants to safeguard their health.

and what I can do better to continue to have good reports

I have been a patient of Dr. Kang's for a number of years. I am very excited about his new book. I am looking forward to reading more about my condition, and what I can do better to continue to have good reports. Dr. Kang is an excellent, caring doctor, and I recommend this book to anyone with kidney disease, or even those who just want to keep their kidneys in good shape so they won't need a doctor. I know before I was referred to Dr. Kang I ate too many foods (many processed meals) with too much sodium and potassium, and now I know I have to watch my intake very carefully. I'm anxious to try the recipes he's included. When I see him again next February I hope my kidney function number will be the highest yet. Thank you Dr. Kang!

Following the Book's Plan Means Added Years

I recently purchased Dr. Kang's book. A must have book for anyone with Kidney Disease. It is easily understood and has easy to make recipes for all meals. This book educates you on eating the right food so this disease does not iprogress any further. It is important to be aware of foods that should be avoided Dr. Kang thourgly covers every aspect a lay person needs to know about this diease.
