This guide had to have been made for me

When I was preparing to take my art content knowledge exam, I felt at a loss in the studying process. I didn't even really know where to start so I stalled around and looked online grasping at straws. Luckily, I ran across this guide and ordered it right away hoping against all hope that it would help me. When I got it, I couldn't believe it. IT was like it was made just for my particular situation. I mean, it went through all of the material I needed like art criticism, design, artifact creation and so much more. Then it tested me on those subjects with questions similar to what I might see on the real test. Plus, the practice tests were nice because the answer key gave explanations so when I got something wrong, I saw why it was wrong right away. The guide even had some secrets to help me form a strategy for studying, which helped me concentrate and stay on track. And the test taking tips were good for calming my nerves on the big day. I really don't know what I would have done without this guide. I'm appreciative to whoever made it. It must have been created just for me to use it and I'm so glad I did!

They did not leave the testing room happy but I did

If you are going to take the Praxis II test, be sure to get this study guide! I completed my degree a number of years ago and I passed the Praxis II on the first try! Read and review this study guide several times as well as practice the writing portion and you will pass your test! When I took my test, there were two other people in the room taking different Praxis tests. They did not leave the testing room happy but I did!

FIRST TIME TO FIND GREAT HELP

This study guide is really cool. It provides the reader everything that he or she should know about Art Making and Historical and Theoretical Foundations of Art. When you hear about art, it seems complex, and that only artists will be able to handle it. But with the use of this study guide it helps the reader simplify things. Some topics may seem to be difficult but they are explained nicely here. The presentation of the topics of this book is really good because it seems to point out all the important things that one should learn and understand. It defines each term in a simple manner. It makes the life of the reader very easy. After the discussions of the topics in art, this book also provides practice questions that are advanced, thorough, and it reflects the things that might be on the test.

Aside from that it has answer keys that are well explained for you, so you do not have to be confused on why it is the correct answer. It also has five secrets to success which will help you in studying towards success. The five secrets to success are as follows: Time is your Greatest Enemy, Guessing is not Guesswork, Practice Smarter, Not Harder, Prepare Don't Procrastinate, and Test Yourself. After that are the general strategies which are helpful in handling each question. This book will not end with just that – it also has additional bonus materials which can be viewed online. Readable and Heady

For a French theorist, de Certeau is reasonably readable. I have only read this in translation, so I will add that caveat. The ideas here are accessible on their own, but the text also features interesting commentary on other philosophers and ideas in a rich discussion. I am particularly a fan of some of his discussions of speech acts, urban spaces, and the grammar of walking. His discussion of strategy and tactics is also an interesting reorientation of ideas.

Required Reading

I purchased the book as required reading for a doctoral level research methods course. It is a translation of work by DeCerteau that is highly conceptual in nature. The focus is upon observing, experiencing and seeking to represent the life-world from a reference point and through a lens that acknowledges that we continually and simultaneously interact, collide, incorporate and are immersed in our experiences of the world and social phenomena. Deconstructing everyday practices, the work seeks to refocus thinking and assert new angles of vision that "make the familiar strange." I especially enjoyed the chapter about navigation and travel described as a train journey in which the typical circumstance of our movement about in a seeming stationary world is reversed to our immobility as the world passes by, until we arrive and the perception is again reversed.

The book is a dense read, which may be due to the theoretical content and to some extent to the translation. In some instances, I found the inclusion of the French phrase by the original author helpful in opening meaning and facilitating understanding when I could not quite grasp the idea from the translation. The work is interesting, but is by no means to be taken up as recreational or light reading. Rather, I found it necessary to bite off in pieces leaving time to digest before moving on to further consumption of the book.

Not a good reference book

This book is poorly researched and contains numerous errors on food origins. Citations are sparse. Not a good reference book.

Omg they're so cute. I love the size and the package is amazing too. They have a description on the back which is also fun and colorful. Got these as a gift for my sister but I told her I would keep them for safe keeping hahaha she couldn't help but laugh.

A Very Nice Tool for Self-Empowerment and Personal Growth

These cards are delightful. I am wary of new-age platitudes, but there is some real substance in this deck. Each card has a short take-away thought on one side, an "affirmation at a glance," if you will. But when you flip it over, you find further elaboration to help you personalize the concept's meaning or amplify it into a healing meditation. Cards addressing specific issues--like body image, home, job/income, age, health, etc.--appear to be the most helpful. They are of good quality, sturdy and shiny like playing cards. The text alternates between printing and cursive script. Five artists decorated them with bright, cheerful colors and appropriate scenes. (However, almost no men or persons of color are shown.) A small hinged box is included for easy storage. As a psychologist, I would feel comfortable using this set with my adult patients. There are no dark scenes or strong language that might act as upsetting triggers in reviewing one's past. And I immediately picked out about ten cards for my own use because I liked them so well. Job well done, Louise!

Awesome Product!

These card ROCK!!!!!! I use them for therapeutic and yoga groups that I led. It is super amazing when someone picks up a card and later shares with me, "this spoke to me right now." Louise Hay does a great job of providing little mantra and encouragement in these cards. Great for mindfulness and empowerment with groups or self. I would recommend to anyone, thanks.

THEN: EMMA

It’s a lovely little flat, the agent says with what could almost pass for genuine enthusiasm. Close to the amenities. And there’s that private bit of roof. That could become a sun terrace, subject of course to the landlord’s consent.

Nice, Simon agrees, trying not to catch my eye. I’d known the flat was no good as soon as I walked in and saw that six-foot stretch of roof below one of the windows. Si knows it too but he doesn’t want to tell the agent, or at least not so soon it’ll seem rude. He might even hope that if I listen to the man’s stupid patter long enough I’ll waver. The agent’s Simon’s kind of guy: sharp, brash, eager. He probably reads the magazine Simon works for. They were exchanging sports
chat before we even got up the stairs.

And here you have a decent-sized bedroom, the agent’s saying. With ample—

It’s no good, I interrupt, cutting short the charade. It’s not right for us.

The agent raises his eyebrows. You can’t be too choosy in this market, he says. This’ll be gone by tonight. Five viewings today, and it’s not even on our website yet.

It’s not secure enough, I say flatly. Shall we go?

There are locks on all the windows, he points out, plus a Chubb on the door. Of course, you could install a burglar alarm, if security’s a particular concern. I don’t think the landlord would have any objection.

He’s talking across me now, to Simon. Particular concern. He might as well have said, Oh, is the girlfriend a bit of a drama queen?

I’ll wait outside, I say, turning to leave.

Realizing he’s blundered, the agent adds, If it’s the area that’s the problem, perhaps you should have a look farther west.

We already have, Simon says. It’s all out of our budget. Apart from the ones the size of a tea bag. He’s trying to keep the frustration out of his voice, but the fact that he needs to riles me even more.

There’s a one-bedroom in Queen’s Park, the agent says. A bit grotty, but . . .

We looked at it, Simon says. In the end we felt it was just a bit too close to that estate. His tone makes it clear that we means “she.”

Or there’s a third-floor just come on in Kilburn—

That too. There was a drainpipe next to one of the windows.

The agent looks puzzled.

Someone could have climbed it, Simon explains.

Right. Well, the rental season’s only just started. Perhaps if you wait a bit.

The agent has clearly decided we’re time-wasters: He too is sidling toward the door. I go and stand outside, on the landing, so he won’t come near me.

We’ve already given notice on our old place, I hear Simon say. We’re running out of options. He lowers his voice. Look, mate, we were burgled. Five weeks ago. Two men broke in and threatened Emma with a knife. You can see why she’d be a bit jumpy.

Oh, the agent says. Shit. If someone did that to my girlfriend I don’t know what I’d do. Look, this might be a long shot, but . . . His voice trails off.

Yes? Simon says.

Has anyone at the office mentioned One Folgate Street to you?

I don’t think so. Has it just come on?

Not exactly, no.

The agent seems unsure whether to pursue this or not.

But it’s available? Simon persists.

Technically, yes, the agent says. And it’s a fantastic property. Absolutely fantastic. In a different league from this. But the landlord’s . . .to say he’s particular would be putting it mildly.

What area? Simon asks.

Hampstead, the agent says. Well, more like Hendon. But it’s really quiet.

Em? Simon calls.

I go back inside. We might as well take a look, I say. We’re halfway there now.

The agent nods. I’ll stop by the office, he says, see if I can locate the details. It’s been a while since I showed anyone around, actually. It’s not a place that would suit just anyone. But I think it might be right up your street. Sorry, no pun intended.



NOW: JANE

“That’s the last one.” The agent, whose name is Camilla, drums her fingers on the steering wheel of her Smart car. “So really, it’s time to make up our minds.”

I sigh. The flat we’ve just viewed, in a run-down mansion block off West End Lane, is the only one in my price range. And I’d just about persuaded myself it was all right—ignoring the peeling wallpaper, the faint smell of someone else’s cooking seeping up from the flat below, the poky bedroom and the mold spattered across the unventilated bathroom—until I’d heard a bell being rung nearby, an old-fashioned hand bell, and the place was suddenly filled with the noise of children. Going to the window, I found myself looking down at a school. I could see into a room being used by a toddler group, the windows hung with cutouts of paper bunnies and geese. Pain tugged at my insides.

“I think I’ll pass on this one,” I managed to say.

“Really?” Camilla seemed surprised. “Is it the school? The previous tenants said they rather liked the sound of children playing.”

“Though not so much they decided to stay.” I turned away. “Shall we go?”

Now Camilla leaves a long, tactical silence as she drives us back to her office. Eventually she says,
“If nothing we saw today took your fancy, we might have to think about upping your budget.”

“Unfortunately, my budget can’t budge,” I say drily, looking out the window.

“Then you might have to be a bit less picky,” she says tartly.

“About that last one. There are . . . personal reasons why I can’t live next to a school. Not right now.”

I see her eyes going to my stomach, still a little flabby from my pregnancy, and her eyes widen as she makes the connection. “Oh,” she says. Camilla isn’t quite as dim as she looks, for which I’m grateful. She doesn’t need me to spell it out.

Instead, she seems to come to a decision.

“Look, there is one other place. We’re not really meant to show it without the owner’s express permission, but occasionally we do anyway. It freaks some people out, but personally I think it’s amazing.”

“An amazing property on my budget? We’re not talking about a houseboat, are we?”

“God, no. Almost the opposite. A modern building in Hendon. A whole house—only one bedroom, but loads of space. The owner is the architect. He’s actually really famous. Do you ever buy clothes at Wanderer?”

“Wanderer . . .” In my previous life, when I had money and a proper, well-paid job, I did sometimes go into the Wanderer shop on Bond Street, a terrifyingly minimalist space where a handful of eye-wateringly expensive dresses were laid out on thick stone slabs like sacrificial virgins, and the sales assistants all dressed in black kimonos.

“Occasionally. Why?”

“The Monkford Partnership designs all their stores. He’s what they call a techno-minimalist
or something. Lots of hidden gadgetry, but otherwise everything’s completely bare.” She shoots me a look. “I should warn you, some people find his style a bit . . . austere.”

“I can cope with that.”

“And . . .”

“Yes?” I prompt, when she doesn’t go on.

“It’s not a straightforward landlord–tenant agreement,” she says hesitantly.

“Meaning?”

“I think,” she says, flicking down her indicator and moving into the left-hand lane, “we should take a look at the property first, see if you fall in love with it. Then I’ll explain the drawbacks.”

Exceeds the hype

As a VINE reviewer, you get used to “advanced praise” and publisher PR statements about how great this book is going to be.
This book exceeds the hype, it might be better than they say it is.
I was hooked and read it in two days about ten hours total reading time.
Nothing is really what it seems to be, everyone has a hidden agenda and the characters might shift at any point.
This seems to be a very straightforward story until the last 40 pages.
However, the author has given us the information, if we notice it.
The ending is very logical, given the story and the people. There is no, 100-year relationship or rabbit out of the hat here.

Be aware this is a very adult story with some graphic sex.
Loved the book and looking forward to the movie.

A good read but a disappointing ending

I listened to the audio version of the novel. There is a lot of shifting between "Then Emma" and "Now Jane" which can get confusing while listening during driving. There are two different women readers, but they sound very similar, which doesn't help the confusion. Several reviews compare this work to "50 Shades of Grey". I do not agree. While there is sexual content, this is not the focus of the book. I enjoyed the book but was disappointed with the ending, which seems a bit "typical Hollywood".

A Practical Guide for the Blogger

When I became aware of this book I was immediately interested as I've recently started a WordPress blog. While I set up and activated the blog with only the helps from WordPress I was always wondering about what I might be missing.

This book carefully and systematically explains the concepts and methodologies behind creating your own personal blog. It sort of fills in some blanks that might be left by the admittedly thorough and helpful steps provided by WordPress.

The author, Todd Kelsey, Ph.D, is a "professional author, and educator" with experience and a sense of humor. The book has a lighthearted, casual feeling about it that makes it reader friendly. It is divided into three parts; Part 1 Getting Acquainted, Part 2 Learning WordPress, and Part 3 Special Topics. Dr. Kelsey places an emphasis on protection and devotes Chapter 6 to Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam: Understanding Spam and Security for WordPress.

The book is carefully structured for learning and clearly exhibits Dr. Kelsey's skill as a communicator and educator; I recommend it highly for anyone who has or wants to have a blog or website.

Who is the audience for this book? I'm not sure.

As someone who has relied primarily on MS FrontPage to create my own Web sites and online software to create blogs, I had never used WordPress. A number of people suggested that it would be a good idea to use WordPress for a series of upcoming professional and personal client projects.

In an attempt to avoid some of the learn-as-you-go horrors of Web site creation, I opted to research WP using this book. It covers the setup basics (and the thought process involved in several key decisions such as doing it yourself or hiring someone else, using a free or paid service, etc.) plus things that a beginner or Web newbie might not even know about (analytics, ads, SEO).

Having done some research and checked out various WordPress sites (and actually experimented with WP account setup), a lot of the upfront material was pretty repetitive. But it would be very useful for a beginner.

My real interest was learning more about themes and templates and I have to say, this didn't provide much information.

What put me off this book was the overall writing style ("Next on our agenda of fun..."), which was somewhat simplistic in places while lacking clarity in others. In some places, it seemed the author was writing down to an audience (I really disliked the "Conclusion" bits at the end of chapters, which started off with "Dear Readers" and many of which included "Congratulations on ...." Felt totally patronizing. And it's not what you expect or want when you're an adult professional reading this, and not a grade-schooler.) However, in other places, the writer was assuming a level of familiarity that beginners using this book would not have. (How likely is it that the beginners who are the natural targets for this book would know what "activating WP-reCAPTCHA" is?)

It's hard to be creative and clever with tech how-tos. Honestly, I don't think you need to be. Just give us the facts in context in an easy to read and follow manner. This book tries too hard to be clever and it could use some editing (ditch the cutesy familiarity and excessive adjectives and tighten up the copy).

I may have had higher expectations based on buying similar books that were better written (again, opinion). This book is from an educational tech publisher and that could be part of the problem. (I wasn't looking for a course textbook, although I've never seen a textbook with the kinds of stuff included in this book.)

The style of the writing in places made me feel as if this was some sort of attempt at a "cool" textbook for young kids. As an adult professional, the writing just turned me off, which is unfortunate as I think there is valuable information and I give the author credit for including topics that go way beyond the start-up process.

Given the topics and the positioning as "getting started with..." I would have expected a glossary of terms. Alas, no glossary was included.

The problem with a lot of these books is that the people who have the most knowledge about the topic are not necessarily the best at sharing that information with a non-tech audience.

A lot of information

I've just started working with Wordpress and I'm just beginning to "get it." I've used other blogging platforms before and have learned by trial and error. I feel like I have more freedom with the Wordpress platform and this book has helped me move things along a bit faster than trying to figure things out by the trial and error way. Be aware there's a lot of information in this book. Some of it you won't need to read if you have any experience at all with blogging software - like how to post a youtube video or how to post the blog to your facebook page. But there are also sections that are invaluable for anyone developing their own blog or website that involve analytics, dealing with digital images, spam, advertising, plugins, SEO etc. I need a lot of help with learning how to promote, optimize and advertise my site when it launches. You should learn these things before launching. But if you've already launched your site, this book can help you rejigger those things that need rejiggering and give you a fresh face. Technology can be intiidating but if you learn what you need to learn one bit at a time, it's all manageable. Believe me. I did it the hard way. This books helps. A lot.
