An excellent introductory anthology

"Philosophy: The Quest for Truth," now in its eighth edition, remains one of the better anthologies appropriate to introductory philosophy courses. Lewis Vaughn continues the the great tradition started by the late Louis Pojman in the late 1980s.

The book is divided into the following major sections: What is philosophy? (This first section also includes a brief but adequate discussion of the basic principles of logic.) Philosophy of religion. Knowledge. Philosophy of mind. Freedom of the will and determinism. Ethics. Political philosophy. What is the meaning of life? Contemporary moral problems. (The last of these sections includes the following questions: Is abortion morally permissible? Is the death penalty morally permissible? Do animals have rights? Do we have obligations to the poor and hungry?)

The selections represent a nice blend of classical and contemporary writings on the various issues. On the whole the selections are balanced between the different positions taken by philosophers on these issues as well. Whatever biases the editors may have is not apparent from the selections they have chosen to anthologize.

A couple helpful extras not often seen in introductory philosophy texts are a timeline at the beginning of the book and an appendix on how to read and write philosophy papers.

I am an English teacher and purchased this book for a student who primarily speaks Mandarin Chinese to supplement his study of the text in class. I gave the book to him today. He glanced through it, looked confused, and told me that it is incomprehensible. Apparently, he says it reads as if someone had put the text of Macbeth into Google Translate. I have no knowledge of Chinese, so I am at a loss in terms of assessing this item myself, but this is a student whom I know would have found the text extremely helpful if it were written correctly.

About the Author

James Dean was the founder of the NASA Art Program and its director from 1962 to 1974. Bertram Ulrich is Curator and Multimedia Manager at NASA and co-author of Abrams’ America in Space: NASA’s First Fifty Years. Thomas Crouch is Senior Curator of Aeronautics at the National Air and Space Museum. Michael Collins was Command Module Pilot on Apollo 11 and the director of the National Air and Space Museum. Ray Bradbury is the author of more than 500 novels, short stories, plays, and volumes of verse.

Somewhat dissapointing

It is always a delight to see examples from the NASA fine arts collection, however, this book offers little more than earlier works drawing from the same well. The classic NASA art collection is "Eyewitness to Space," which covers the first part of the NASA fine arts program up to Apollo 11. It features large and well prepared versions of the works. It is sadly long out of print, but can be found with used book services for those seriously interested in the topic. A much more recent book, "NASA & the Exploration of Space," is readily available and is extremely rich with art, showing works that not only cover NASA's program up to the late 90's, but also several works from the Apollo era not present in "Eyewitness." Almost all the works shown in "NASA/Art" can be found in either of these two volumes, and in larger format. This book isn't a bad start for those not familiar with the NASA art program, but you would be just as well to start off with "NASA & the Exploration of Space."

NASA Art 50 Years of Exploration

I visited a NASA Art Exhibit in Huntsville, AL in 2009. I planned to use pictures from this exhibit for a presentation to my Astronomy club, Richmond Astronomical Society. I used this book to complete my presentation as it provided insights on the NASA art program. I love this book. As a baby boomer it brought back many memories of living the space race. It shows the excitement, anxiety, triumphs and heart break of the history of NASA through the crafts of art. If you are a baby boomer with a love of the space program this book is a great trip down memory lane. For a special effect, listen to Gustav Holst's Planets while reading and viewing this book.

This book has a great collection of artwork and the cover design is really eye catching and bold. The lenticular front panel is also a neat touch.

I think the really great thing about this book is how it looks at the artistic side of science and engineering - a topic you don't often see...especially with NASA.

There is a lot of good content in this book and most of it is ...

This book is....decent. I wanted to give it 3.5 stars but I can't on here. There is a lot of good content in this book and most of it is pretty clear to follow once you get into it. I also like the approach of transitioning MVC developers to Web API, although there wasn't as much comparison between the two frameworks as I would expect based on the title. I like that Freeman always explains how things work behind the scenes to some extent rather than just telling you how to do something.

I have two main complaints about this book. The first is that it uses knockout.js for most of the examples of actually sending requests to Web API services. I think it's highly unnecessary to add a whole javascript framework into the mix and adds a ton of bloat to the book. I think most of the examples could have easily been replaced with simpler calls through something like Fiddler or Postman, or even something more lightweight or wide spread like jQuery. I have no need to learn knockout at the moment, but I still had to read through a lot of knockout code to understand some of the examples.

My second complaint sort of builds off of the first - this book just has a ton of bloat in general. It's almost 700 pages long but feels like it could be about half that. The entire first section (out of three) is very slow moving and knockout/html example heavy. The second two sections of the book are much more interesting and far more useful for actually learning Web API.

I also wish the book spent a little bit more time on overall web service design concepts and how to architect solutions in a scalable way - the book is very code oriented, it would be nice if there was some more big picture content. The chapter on web services in general is only about 10 pages long.

This might sound harsh but this book is still definitely worth reading for the later 2/3rds of the book, what's there is great if you can figure out how to skim past the bloat.

About the Author In 1901/02 Baron Eugene Fersen came to the United States with his Mother the Grand Duchess of Russia; in 1904 he began teaching his knowledge to humanity, the Science of Being. The Baron was intimately associated with the world's most eminent teachers, scientists and philosophers; some of those who were among his personal teachers are known to us today as the Great Magi. In the late 1800's through the mid 1900's Eugene taught or influenced some of the greatest teachers of our time: Charles Haanel, Dr. Hotema, Elizabeth Towne, Wallace D. Wattles, Edgar Cayce, Annie Besant, Huna Max Freedom Long, Charles Fillmore, Samuel Clemens, Nikola Tesla, Manly P. Hall, Jon Peniel and even Rudolph Steiner himself was touched by Eugene's teachings and had him as a guest speaker/teacher in the Steiner Schools whenever possible. By the time of his parting to the Great Beyond in 1956, the Baron Eugene Fersen has personally instructed over 20,000 students and over more than 100,000 people worldwide had read or been exposed to the the teachings of The Science of Being. These teachings still touch the lives of Mankind today and are regarded as some of the most inspiring literary works in regards to the education of Scientific Spiritual and human enlightenment. One of the Best, Most Useful Books Ever Read

The book Science of Being (containing seven lessons) is one of the most important, useful, and meaningful books ever read and used by me. In my workshops, lectures, and in private conversations, this book has been recommended wholeheartedly for over forty years as one of the best ways to enhance and improve one's life and well-being, while adding meaning and purpose to one's existence. Out of hundreds of books read, this truly is a star, and its companion volume, The Fundamental Principles of the Science of Being (27 lessons, all different from those in the previous book) is just as worthwhile.

Not only is the information presented therein quite interesting, but also the techniques given in it make the book immensely valuable and useful. The amazing thing is that the techniques work from the first time that someone uses them. Contacting and feeling the Universal Life Energy is quite an experience in itself. Once one contacts this energy, and successfully uses it to enhance one's life and affairs, the the book becomes an integral part of one's life, and even more fully appreciated.

Hats off to the brilliant, dedicated staff of Lightbearers Publishing for their hard work and dedication in producing this fine reprint, the third edition of this remarkable book. The larger print makes it easier to read and highlight, underline, and circle important parts. The added information she has included, without altering the contents of the original manuscript, adds a new dimension to understanding the man behind the work. The cover picture seem to drawn one into it, and the history behind it makes it more meaningful. I have had the priviledge of owning a full sized print of this for decades, and people who have held it have been touched by the feel it emits.

In short; buy this book; use it; you should be quite pleased.

This In An Exceptional Book!

The "Science of Being" book has made an impact in my life. Not only is its message felt at the soul level, but also the practical exercises given in the book are very helpful in one's every day life. The Star Exercise is a particularly powerful one. May this book light your spiritual path.

Truly a magnificent book involving the Laws of the Universe

Baron Eugene Ferson, who penned The Science of Being in 1922, explains with unequaled clarity and depth, the many laws of the Universe and how we can understand/realize and recognize them and make them work in our favor. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
